Treetop property in Kenya’s Masai Mara to welcome first guests this August
The Ritz-Carlton has confirmed plans to open its first luxury safari camp this August.
The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp will be located in Kenya on the banks of the Sand River, close to the Kenya-Tanzania border.
A total of 20 tented suites will be set among the treetops, featuring private decks, infinity plunge pools, sunken lounges and indoor and outdoor showers. For families or groups, the four-bedroom Presidential Suite will offer a spacious indoor-outdoor living space, private dining areas and a kitchenette.
All suites will feature a dedicated ‘Encholiek’ – a Masai term meaning ‘one who walks with you’ – to provide personalised butler service during guests’ stays.
The camp’s main restaurant will offer a “unique take on fine dining” while bush breakfasts and picnic lunches will allow visitors to dine in the wilderness. Guests can also enjoy meals on the camp’s elevated sky deck; in the private wine cellar, where expert-led tastings will showcase rare vintages; or at the boma, a communal gathering area, where they’ll enjoy slow-cooked barbecue meats and stews around an open fire while hearing stories of local culture and history from the camp’s experts.
Elsewhere, the camp will feature a spa and wellness centre offering treatments inspired by Indigenous healing traditions, a gym and a pool overlooking the savannah.
Guests will also get access to an on-site photographic studio including professional Canon equipment and expert guidance to help them capture high-quality images.
The Ritz-Carlton said the camp’s design and operations had sustainability at their “core”, with solar power, rainwater harvesting and waste reduction initiatives minimising environmental impact. Materials and furnishings have been sourced from local artisans to support the regional economy, and the camp has partnered with local builders and guides.
Private game drives will take place in open-air Land Cruisers with expert local guides. Guests can also take part in nature walks, hot air balloon flights above the plains, and “immersive” village visits to engage with the Masai community.
The Ritz-Carlton said the new opening would bring “the brand’s legendary service and elegant style to the heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife conservation regions”.
“At The Ritz-Carlton, we believe in the power of travel to transform - not just the places we visit, but also those who journey there,” said Helen Leighton, vice-president of luxury Brands for EMEA.
“The Masai Mara is one of the most spectacular destinations in the world and we look forward to introducing The Ritz-Carlton’s first safari experience and signature hospitality to this extraordinary setting.
“Each guest will enjoy a bespoke adventure based on their ultimate safari. From breathtaking wildlife encounters to personalised service in the heart of the savannah, every moment is designed to inspire, leaving guests with a renewed sense of wonder that will stay with them long after they leave.”
The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp is located near Serena Airstrip, a 45-minute flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport. The property can also be accessed via a five-hour drive from Nairobi.
Rates start from $3,500 per person, per night, on an all-inclusive basis.
