Arctic expedition travel specialist Basecamp Explorer (Norway) has partnered with conservation organisation Polar Bears International to host a research-led Arctic expedition in 2026.
Guests joining the “science-led” expedition on July 16-26, 2026, will experience a stay at Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel in Svalbard before a seven-night sailing on board Northern Expeditions’ Kinfish vessel.
The trip will aim to “turn travellers into informed Arctic ambassadors while directly contributing to vital conservation efforts”, with Polar Bears International sharing "scientific insights, field data and climate expertise to inform guest experiences and strengthen Basecamp Explorer’s conservation initiatives”.
Prices start from £14,100 per person including full board, Zodiac excursions and activities.
The partnership will see Basecamp Explorer provide broader logistical support and field assistance for Polar Bears International’s “critical” work in Svalbard, contributing to the “protection of polar bears in their natural habitat” through research including behavioural tracking and den monitoring.
All Basecamp Explorer guests now contribute to this initiative through a dedicated fee included in their booking.
The operator offers 11 additional four to eight-day Arctic itineraries which incorporate stays at Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel, dog sledding, glacier hiking, iceberg kayaking, expert insights, research-informed guide training and interactive sessions on ecology and climate.
Every journey - including the Polar Bears International itinerary - are bookable through UK travel agents.
Basecamp Explorer offers ongoing fam trips with travel agents to allow for familiarisation with the area and itineraries.
Basecamp Explorer’s destination manager Birgitte Tautra Vegsund said: “We are thrilled to be working with Polar Bears International to inspire travellers and the global community to take meaningful action for the Arctic. Our shared commitment to education and conservation ensures that every guest who visits Svalbard not only experiences its incredible wildlife but also becomes an ambassador for its protection.”
Krista Wright, Polar Bears International’s executive director, added: “We’re honoured to expand our work in Svalbard, a special place where Polar Bears International is grateful to have been working for several years across initiatives including community-centred coexistence, maternal den research and meaningful engagement through our Ice House interpretive centre.
“Visitors here have a rare chance to witness Arctic wildlife firsthand, but also to learn about the challenges of a rapidly warming region – and the collaboration between Polar Bears International and Basecamp Explorer translates this experience into action, helping travellers become informed Arctic ambassadors, while producing Svalbard-based scientific research and coexistence solutions.”
Both companies said the partnership marked “the beginning of a long-term collaboration”.
