An intimate yacht cruise is the perfect way to flit between some of the Mediterranean’s finest sites
From its mooring in the harbour, Emerald Azzurra positively sparkles. Passersby whisper about the yacht in hushed, excited tones; others stop to stare, slack-jawed at its pearly white exterior and gleaming, polished hull. The vessel wouldn’t look out of place in a James Bond film. And that’s when it sinks in: I must be one of the luckiest people in the world, because this state-of-the-art yacht, Emerald Cruises’ first ocean ship, is my home for the next week. We gather for a welcoming meet-and-greet before being shown to our cabin – one of 50 on board (Emerald Azzurra carries just 100 guests). Once inside, I immediately feel a sense of comfort thanks to the enormous king-sized bed dressed in luxury Egyptian cotton. It feels like the room is whispering for us to relax. A cosy seating area with a sleek desk and oversized mirror seems ready to accommodate our needs, whether we’re winding down or preparing for the day ahead, while ample cupboard space makes unpacking feel effortless, helping us settle in comfortably and truly creating a home away from home. The stylish bathroom, finished in white and grey marble, features a spacious rainforest shower as well as Missoni towels and Espa amenities, all designed to refresh and pamper us. Outside, a balcony awaits with two comfy chairs and a table – a secluded spot that quickly becomes one of our favourite places to relax.
Mediterranean charm
Aptly named Mediterranean Enchantment, our sailing is nothing short of magical, whisking us from Dubrovnik in southern Croatia to the Greek capital of Athens, with stops in Kotor, Montenegro; Saranda, Albania; Corfu; and Kefalonia in between. This eight-day voyage was catapulted into the spotlight last November with the airing of ITV1’s five-part food and travel series Judi Love’s Culinary Cruise, which showcased life on board Emerald Azzurra as well as five destinations from the Mediterranean Enchantment itinerary. It’s certainly a sailing made for TV, I think, as we wander the historic heart of Dubrovnik, ambling through cobble-stoned alleyways and stopping for coffee to soak in the stunning architecture and watch fellow tourists pass by. The following morning, after crossing into Montenegro overnight, we sail into the harbour of Kotor, the lights of the town twinkling as the sun begins to rise. The tour for the day is to bravely tackle the formidable city walls, which wind for three miles with a staggering 1,700 steps (they’re worth every minute for the breathtaking views).
With the sun shining down on us every step of the way, and under the direction of our knowledgeable guide, we reach the top to be rewarded with spectacular vistas of the surrounding fjord, before making the steep journey down to catch the coach back to the yacht. The weather is kind to us in Saranda, the seaside town on the Albanian Riviera, where a horseshoe-shaped bay gives way to sandy beaches and a wide promenade. Tirana residents relocate here in the summer, but our experience – including an issue with entry at a national park – suggests it isn’t quite as well set up for international tourism as our other ports of call. In Corfu, we get lost in the charming Old Town and indulge in the most delicious Greek meze while being warmly welcomed by locals. On day five, we sail into Kefalonia, embarking on an unforgettable visit to the famous 150-million-year-old Drogarati Cave, where stunning stalactites and stalagmites surround you as you step into this natural wonder. The site is famous for its vast chamber, known as The Concert Hall, heralded for its perfect acoustics. We’re magically serenaded here by Omar Portillo, the yacht’s entertainer, whose voice – giving us a beautiful rendition of When You Wish Upon a Star – is nothing short of angelic. With everything included on Emerald Azzurra, from shore excursions and airport transfers to all meals and drinks, the line ensures the charm of each destination is truly front and centre.
Onboard luxuries
Unveiled in 2022, Emerald Azzurra marked a change of course for Scenic-owned brand Emerald Cruises, which started out in 2013 specialising in river cruises under the name Emerald Waterways. The luxury ocean yacht has been so successful that the line has since boosted the fleet with two sister ships: Emerald Sakara, which launched in August 2023, and Emerald Kaia, scheduled to make its debut in April 2026. It’s easy to see why the product is so beloved. Being on board Emerald Azzurra is just as much of an adventure as our stops at each port. Our meal at Reflections Restaurant provides a real treat for the senses, with a lively but laid-back vibe filled with the buzz of guests sharing their experiences from the day, and a menu that features dishes inspired by the places we visit. I ask Paul Miller, the head chef, for his recommendation, and he brings out a dazzling plate of grilled octopus drizzled with lemon and herbs. In just one bite, I’m transported back to our adventures in Corfu. The restaurant also hosts breakfast and lunch, with lavish buffets packed with tasty choices: think Mediterranean salads drizzled with olive oil and warm, crusty artisan bread. On sunny mornings, we head to the spacious terrace to eat alfresco.
The ocean breeze lifts our spirits as we dine in the morning sun, enjoying our meals before exploring the next port of call. Between stops, many guests spend their day soaking up the rays by the stunning infinity-style Aqua Pool and relaxing on the softest, deepest sun loungers that surround it. If clients are in the mood for a little relaxation, they can hop into the hot tub. The yacht’s attentive 72-strong crew are always nearby, ready to whip up the tastiest of cocktails or bring your drink of choice – the focus is all about delivering exactly what guests want. For those seeking a bit of adventure, the marina platform is set up at select ports, where guests can dive into some fun water activities such as paddleboarding, snorkelling and kayaking. If pampering is more your client’s thing, they can check out the spa and state-of-the-art gym, where they’ll be able to join yoga classes and participate in energetic fitness activities. There’s even a salon on board to help you look your best every day.
When the sun goes down, the fun doesn’t stop. Evenings on our Mediterranean adventure are filled with the dulcet tones of resident entertainer Omar as well as trivia games, karaoke and some lively dancing, keeping our nights full of fun and laughter. Indeed, it’s the guests who stand out on our Emerald Cruises sailing. By day we enjoy separate adventures before coming together in the evenings to share our stories. We gather on deck under a perfect sunset, which paints the sky in lovely shades of orange and pink, and toast each other with clinking glasses. It’s heartwarming to see friendships forged between people who were once strangers, now connected and enjoying a wonderful adventure together. As we swap mobile numbers and set up WhatsApp groups, there is promise in the air: the promise of more adventures, more laughter and more memories to be made in the future.
